Hollfelder Group

Ph.D Student

Joined the Hollfelder group: September 2021

Background and Current Projects:  After a BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, I worked on a SAP software implementation in Uganda connecting smallholder farmers to international value chains followed by a strategy consulting internship in Germany and the US where I advised a global healthcare company. Then, I completed the Computer Science degree MSc Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence at the Technical University of Munich with a focus on probabilistic machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision. I wrote my Master’s dissertation about an interpretation of Variational Autoencoders using Deep Gaussian Processes in the Machine Learning research group at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory.

During that time here in Cambridge, I got fascinated by the potential of machine learning models for enzymatic discovery and single-cell sequencing. Thus, I joined the Hollfelder Lab as a research scholar and started my PhD in October 2023. In my PhD research, I want to examine how machine learning can be used to enhance our understanding of deep mutational scanning data generated from directed evolution campaigns and of the sequence space in general. Thus, I will work with Protein Transformer Language Models, Probabilistic Machine Learning, as well as Geometric Deep Learning. Also, I work on a full transcriptome single-cell sequencing project. I am very keen to connect. So, if you are interested in my research feel free to reach out.

Interests: Next to the time spent in the lab, I am also an Events’ Officer of the Cambridge University German Society organising a broad range of events. Also, I have a deep interest in deeptech, (bio-) technology, and the entire start-up landscape in Cambridge. As a former high-performance rower, I love sports especially rowing, swimming, and cycling.
